Pick a Protagonist

Posted on March 12, 2025March 12, 2025 by helen

These are just a few of the types of protagonist you can create in a novel. Creating a main character who is an underdog can be compelling for your audience. Try coming up with a character who is at a disadvantage due to health, mental or emotional state or age. When combined with positive qualities like determination or selflessness, their vulnerability can be captivating.

Another posssibility is to create a main character who is admirable. Maybe they are giving and upright- think nurse or teacher. To add nuance, try giving them private moments where they show their inner selves.

Or you could create a character who is strong and beautiful and yet has an unusual interest, perhaps a librarian who likes bungee jumping.
